A Seat at the EV Table

By Jeff Gavin / Electrical Contractor / November 2023

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker targets one million electric vehicles (EVs) on the roads by 2030, and Powering Chicago, a collaboration between IBEW Local 134 and NECA, is leading the charge.

The initiative strategically plans EV integration and serves as a vital resource for stakeholders. Elbert Walters III, Executive Director of Powering Chicago, emphasizes collaboration, recognizing the importance of industry expertise.

Illinois’s EV goal reflects a convergence of forces, with projections anticipating EVs representing 62% to 86% of global sales by 2030. Powering Chicago, beyond infrastructure, actively partners with Commonwealth Edison and addresses challenges through collaboration with the Illinois Alliance for Clean Transportation (IACT).

IACT’s approach involves educating communities and overcoming obstacles. Gene M. Kent, Executive Director of IN-Tech, stresses the need for education in complex EV installations.

Despite challenges like interoperability, collaborative efforts by Powering Chicago and IACT signal progress toward a more connected and electric future in Illinois.

As Illinois sets its sights on one million EVs by 2030, Powering Chicago is lighting the way for a cleaner, smarter transportation landscape.
