Winter Power Generation at Risk

The North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC) released its 2023-24 winter outlook, warning that more than half of the United States and parts of Canada could face power shortages during the winter. The report cites a combination of extreme weather conditions and insufficient natural gas infrastructure as potential causes for the shortages. Approximately 180 million people in regions such as the U.S. Midwest, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and South, along with certain Canadian provinces, are identified as being at the highest risk for electricity supply shortages. NERC emphasizes the need for improved natural gas pipeline and infrastructure to address the growing demand for gas generation during winter. The report also highlights the complexity of load forecasting during winter, posing challenges in estimating demand accurately.
