Researchers Are Using New Method to Recycle Old Batteries

Researchers at Rice University have developed a new method for recycling precious metals such as cobalt and nickel from spent batteries. The process, called flash Joule heating, involves subjecting battery waste to extremely high temperatures for a brief time, allowing for a more efficient and sustainable recovery of valuable metals. The method has proven effective in liberating metals from the complex structure of spent batteries in just 20 minutes, compared to the traditional 24-hour process. This innovation addresses challenges associated with resource scarcity and environmental sustainability in battery recycling and supports a closed-loop and circular approach to materials in the battery industry.
